On 7 January 2013, the highly respected and well–known East End artist George Lewis Doneo died. Throughout the first decade of this century, Doneo exhibited extensively and organised and curated numerous exhibitions in London and the USA. Aesthetic and social concerns lie at the centre of his paintings, neon works and installations, and his insightful and honest disposition made him an excellent curator. In keeping with his restless spirit and inquiring intelligence his work primarily raised questions about the meaning and validity of contemporary art in response to the technological and communication revolution we live through.

The exhibition at the Mayor’s Parlour presents an overview of the diverse oeuvre of Doneo’s practise, while the exhibition at The Lion and Lamb, 46 Fanshaw Street, Hoxton, N1 6LG on Friday 10 January presents a selection of Doneo’s paintings curated by Peter Ashton Jones.
